Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
“That’s just how life is, there’s nothing we can do about it.” As the words came out of my mouth, I knew something was wrong. Our life felt out of balance. We were doing all “good things,” but it was just too full. I began to ask the question, “Is this it? Am I created to feel like I can’t keep up? Am I destined to never have time to help those in need?“
I don’t think I’m alone.
Most of us have given up the dream of a balanced spiritual life where there is time for all the things we feel called to.
The reason we give up is because the myth of balance is impossible. It can’t be done.
But God calls us to more than a balanced life. God calls us to make room in our lives for trust and leaning. Proverbs 3 so beautifully tells us we need to “trust in the Lord and lean on his understanding.”
When we trust in the lord and lean on Him we do what he has CALLED us to. Not what we feel we HAVE to do. We will begin to let go of the things that are keeping us from God’s call and pick up those things that will help us reach our calling.
We also will be confident in our ability to create boundaries. We know to be in Shalom we must be in right relationship with God, humanity, and creation. Which means that we make room for his call.
My prayer for all of us is a straight path with him. Not being moved by what we HAVE to do, but making room to be CALLED to what we need to do!
Next week we will talk about what that calling or “right path” looks like, but for now I leave you with this
